Multi-Level Marketing Campaign Setup

Learn how to set up a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) structure for your reward campaign.

Multi-level marketing (MLM) has long been a powerful strategy for brands seeking to build affiliate networks and reward direct and indirect advocates. By incorporating MLM into your campaign, you can not only attract new customers but also incentivize participants with commissions from the purchases made by their network.

In an MLM structure, direct and indirect advocates earn bonuses whenever a referral completes a purchase, creating a mutually beneficial cycle that drives deeper engagement and long-term success in your referral program.

Please Note: This is an optional feature. Use only If you want to build a Multi-Level Marketing campaign. MLM is only available on certain Genius plans. See our plans and pricing here.
Please Note: By default, when you open a Genius Referrals account, we create your first referral MLM campaign. The details of your default campaign are based on the input entered into the onboarding process. You can always edit or customize your MLM campaign whenever you want.

Each plan has a different limit for the number of reward campaigns running simultaneously. See our plans and pricing here.

Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up an MLM Campaign

Step 1: Select the Bonus Value

The bonus structure is essential for MLM campaigns, and you can choose between a fixed or percentage value:

  • Percentage: Advocates earn a percentage of the referral's purchase.
  • Fixed: Advocates earn a fixed bonus per referral, regardless of the purchase amount.
MLM Campaign Example:

In this scenario, both the direct and indirect advocate earns a bonus. John is the indirect advocate, Matt is the direct advocate, and Anne is the referral. When Anne completes a purchase, Matt receives $10, and John receives $5.
MLM Campaign Example:

In this scenario, John is the indirect advocate, Matt is the direct advocate, and Anne is the referral. When Anne completes the purchase of $100, Matt receives $10, and John wins $10 (10% of $100)
Step 2: Set a Maximum Bonus Limit

To maintain control over bonus distribution, you can cap the total bonus an advocate can earn per level.
MLM Campaign Example:

In this scenario, John is the indirect advocate, Matt is the direct advocate, and Anne is the referral. When Anne completes a purchase, Matt earns $10 and John $5. John will continue to earn a $5 bonus up to $300.

Creating Multiple levels on your referral program campaign

You can create multiple levels to reward multiple levels of indirect advocates. The following image shows an example of a three levels campaign.

Levels:

  • On level 2: the indirect advocate receives $5 every time a direct advocate earns a bonus.

  • On level 3: the indirect advocate receives $3 every time a direct advocate earns a bonus.

  • On level 4: the indirect advocate receives 1% of the purchase amount made by the referral every time a direct advocate earns a bonus.

The previous multi-level setup will look like the following image.
